On Packaging Design

Packaging is an evolving art form. At Atlason, we believe structural packaging design can transform how people experience products — making interactions better, more well-rounded, and more satisfying.

The studio delivers innovative packaging design, focused on sustainability, bringing in-depth knowledge of materials, manufacturing technologies, and market needs.

From direct-to-consumer experiences to disruptive in-retail presence, we consider the user experience holistically from consumer engagement through disposal.

We have delivered successful packaging solutions for clients across industries, including beauty, personal care, beverages and technology.

The Evolution of Packaging Design

The truth is, a lot of structural packaging is generic. While it might be a vehicle for the brand, it often isn’t a true expression of the brand. For traditional products, this was usually enough — Coca Cola and Pepsi, for example, have always been sold in the same aluminum can.

However, times have changed. There has been a fundamental shift in context: packaging design no longer functions as a small-scale billboard on a shelf but exists in multiple dimensions.

Modern Packaging Design Challenges

If at one point, packaging was thought of as a vehicle to garner attention on store shelves. Increasingly the package is an expression of the brand, not only visually but through experience. As the package needs to deliver a delightful user experience, be recognized online; as a tiny picture on the screen of your phone, or in user generated media or in an influencer video.

Our Approach to Packaging Design

We work with clients to unlock packaging’s full potential across all channels — from beverages to beauty, direct-to-consumer to retail shelves. We see structural packaging as an underutilized opportunity to connect with audiences, offering possibilities that many brands have yet to explore. Innovative packaging design creates multiple touchpoints in the consumer experience — visual, tactile, and interactive — both online and in person. By crafting moments of surprise and delight through these interactions, brands gain a powerful competitive edge.

Sustainable Packaging

Packaging generates significant material waste, creating an urgent need for innovation. The way we interact with and consume goods faces increasing scrutiny from both the public and regulators worldwide.

Our packaging design process is integrally connected to:

  • Material selection and innovation
  • Manufacturing capabilities
  • Delivery methods optimization
  • Sustainability objectives & commitments

We analyze complex supply chains, to find efficiencies in packaging operations, streamlining and optimizing the use of individual components to reduce overall packaging, while prioritizing sustainable materials that end up in a single recycling stream.

Atlason is our strategic innovation partner for structural packaging. In an environment dependent on highly optimized packaging formats, it is a challenge to innovate without incurring high costs. They have managed to translate our business objectives into elegant consumer solutions, designed for manufacturing, and pushing the boundaries of our manufacturing ecosystem.
