On Furniture Design

We work with leading brands to create forward-looking furniture and lighting that have led to award-winning outcomes and extended beyond furniture design to include research and brand strategy, as well as photography and art direction.

We leverage our experience with manufacturers across Asia, Europe, and the United States to ensure the integration of innovative thinking, refinement and manufacturability’.

Does the world need more furniture?

In short, no. It needs better furniture. At Atlason, our furniture design practice centers on this fundamental truth — creating pieces that advance how we live, work, and interact with our environment.

Design inherently grapples with paradoxes, conundrums, and conflicting requirements — challenges that make furniture design particularly compelling to our studio. We believe furniture is constantly moving forward with us as a society, supporting our bodies through a shifting and evolving series of work and leisure activities

Our Approach to Furniture Development:

We engage in thorough research and apply methods honed by industrial-design thinking to the furniture we create. This enables us to develop specific solutions depending on human needs and context, from everyday work and life scenarios to emerging activities like gaming or meditation.

Furniture development must respond to our deepening understanding of physical and mental well-being.  We continuously examine these evolving needs to create more thoughtful solutions.

Innovation in Furniture Design

Chairs are one of the world’s most fundamental design objects. Every day we trust different chairs to support us, from subway seats to ergonomic office chairs to dining chairs.

While some view furniture as stagnant or driven primarily by aesthetics, we see exciting possibilities for innovation. We bring fresh perspectives to furniture design by applying our industrial design expertise to develop new solutions. Along the way, we interpret briefs for versatility of context, creating products with crossover utility.

Sustainable Furniture Design:

As designers committed to environmental responsibility, we confront the paradox of creating new furniture every day.

Our responsibility has extended into designing furniture that is both beautiful and adaptive. It is a product of whole-cycle thinking that utilizes:

  • Sustainable material alternatives
  • Advanced manufacturing method
  • New technology applications
  • Environmental impact considerations
The Lína swivel lounge chair — with its graceful sweeping lines, beautifully tailored seams, and perfect fit for either residential or contract settings — demonstrates what’s possible when DWR partners with designers of the highest caliber. Atlason studio deftly tackled complex engineering challenges, while creating a captivating aesthetic with every detail carefully considered. From preliminary review of design briefs, to final prototyping, Hlynur and team were an absolute pleasure to work with.
